Description

The purpose of this module is to explore key foundation skills necessary for successful mentoring of novice teachers. Participants who utilize this module will learn the four essential components of successful mentoring--building trust, communication and collaboration, meeting the needs of diverse learners through cultural responsiveness, and building ownership, through student data. This module was developed for mentors working with novice teachers, but the essential components addressed can also be applied to veteran teachers as well.

 

The learning module is intended for use by all educators.

About the Authors

Jessica Floyd

Jessica Floyd has worked as a devoted educator in North Carolina in Title I schools for 10 years.  She currently works in a rural community teaching 2nd grade. She has experience teaching K, 3rd, and 4th grades in addition to 2nd grade.  Her passion is to reach the little minds of today and build upon them for a better tomorrow. She is married to Kyle and has the cutest fur baby, a 120 lb. lap dog Shep.  They are expecting their first child in September. She is now pursuing her Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction in order to broaden her horizons and shift her focus not only to students but to educators as well.

Kendra Lynn

Kendra Lynn has worked in education in South Carolina in Title 1 schools for 8 years. She has experience teaching students in grades three through five. She currently serves as a District Elementary Instructional Coach. As an educator, Kendra has developed and written curriculum units, pacing documents, and assessments. She has served as a Mentor to many novice teachers. She has also worked with teachers across various districts in the areas of english language arts, math, and technology integration. She is  now pursuing her Doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction to advance her knowledge so that she can continue to help others advance.

Lisa McCullough

Lisa McCullough has worked as an educator for the past 16 years.  She started her teaching career in Maryland while working for Montgomery County Public Schools as a middle grades Reading teacher.  After taking off four years from teaching to care for her father diagnosed with Alzheimer, she relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina.  Currently working as an Instructional Coach, Lisa enjoys her work with teachers and watching its impact on student learning. She is a doctoral student in the Curriculum and Instruction program at Gardner Webb University.  In addition to her professional career, Lisa enjoys spending time family, especially with her 8-month old grandson.

Chandra Morrow

Chandra Morrow is a dedicated educator committing 20+ years to the profession.  She has taught in Minneapolis, MN, Dallas, TX, and Houston TX. She currently works as Literacy Facilitator at the best-kept secret in Charlotte, NC.  Students at her school represent 27 countries and speak over 20 different languages. Chandra is a doctoral student in the Curriculum and Instruction program at Gardner-Webb University and plans to use this experience to continue advocating for the profession. Chandra is married to Horace and has three wonderful children; Xavier, Drew, & Zoey.  She now advocates for teachers both as an educator and as a mother.
